    You forgot that:

When two people have an iPhone, they have a sort of unspoken bond - they have something to talk about.

Sad but true.a Different thing for each of us. Perhaps something to make us look cool of we have an ego problem. I try to use mine under the table in cafes to be descrete but also block out the sunlight. Sometimes it does end up finding itself on the table for all to see so it does have a mind of it's own too !

...and according to a few sources, an iPhone will burn, just like a cigarette. Granted, you have to leave it in the car in the sun in an equatorial nation at noon, but still.

I second that, and I'm ready to offer to my girlfriend my iPhone in order to get her stop smoking :)

More importantly, does that mean the rumored Apple tablet is the new meerschaum pipe?

The iPhone does not fill one crucial criteria though: it doesn't provide an excuse for several people to have a private conversation away from a larger group.

Surely there's an app for that.

An app for people to talk to each other.........you might be on to something !

It's crazy, but it just might work!

I think that in order to make the deepest connection between the two, you're called upon to make sure that there's some lurking danger as a consequence of iPhone addiction. That would both make the natural continuation of the metaphor funnier and a bit more pointed.
